CAPS EARN PLAYER OF THE MONTH HONORABLE MENTIONS

Oct 6, 2014

September was a big month for Topeka hockey. Both the RoadRunners and the Capitals charged to the top of their respective divisions and, in doing so, received recognition for Brett Malkmus, Colin O'Connor, and Alex Sauer as Player of the Month honorable mentions.

GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH HONORABLE MENTION: Brett Malkmus

In three September starts, Malkmus held still-undefeated Nashville to a tie in regulation before yielding during a shootout, made four saves to help close out the Jr. Brahmas, and stopped 35 of 37 to take game two against Texas on the 27th. On the season, Malkmus is 2-0-1 with 88 saves for a .926 save percentage.

FORWARD OF THE MONTH HONORABLE MENTION: Alex Sauer

With two goals and four assists last month, Sauer is establishing himself as an offense threat in the South Division. In the final game of the team's three-game sweep of Texas, he had one goal and a whopping three assists to help propel to Caps to a 4-3 win. Last weekend, Sauer added his third goal and five more assists as Topeka enjoyed their second straight three-win series.

DEFENSEMAN OF THE MONTH HONORABLE MENTION: Colin O'Connor

The 6' tall Chicago native posted four points in the Texas series and the team held a +2 advantage while he was on the ice for the month. In the sweep clinching game against the Jr. Brahmas on the 28th, O'Connor fired in two, the last of which was the game winner.

"We are proud of our player's individual accomplishments," said head coach Anthony Bohn. "Everyone plays their part in our team's success. We are not about stats. What's important to us is what we do together."

The Capitals return home for two games this weekend against the Twin City Steel. The games are on Saturday (3pm) and Sunday (11am) at Landon Arena. Tickets for these games are only $5 and parking is free.
