CAPS WRAP UP SUCCESSFUL SHOWCASE 2-1-0

Dec 9, 2014

Building on what has been a strong start to their second season, the Capitals return from the NA3HL Showcase after taking four of six possible points.

In their Showcase opener on Sunday, Kyle Rimbach scored the first of three power play goals for the Caps on the day (assisted by Alex Johanson at 10:51) to give Topeka a 1-0 lead. Tre Opack would add one of his own at 11:24 (assisted by Colin O’Connor) to double the lead before Yellowstone’s Mike McCullen made it 2-1 with a power play goal of his own to end the scoring in the first period.

The Quake tied things up early in the second on a goal by Sean Pilet. The Caps would respond at 11:35 with Opack’s second tally of the game (assisted by Steve MacIver and Spencer Sabourin), putting Topeka ahead to stay. Hank Roers sealed the victory with a power play netter to end the second and an insurance goal in the middle of the third that set the final at 5-2.

On Monday, La Crosse took a commanding 3-0 lead with two goals in the first and another early in the second before Rimbach finally dented the scoreboard for Topeka. The goal (assisted by Roers and Drew Kelly) was Topeka’s point and the Freeze added two more to put the game out of reach to win 5-1.

In Tuesday’s final game, the Caps scored early and often against Billings, posting five unanswered on their way to shutout victory. Alex Sauer notched the eventual game winner on a power play at 4:05 of the first (assisted by O’Connor and Igor Valko) and the final goal of the game at 11:22 of the second (assisted by Johanson and Dylan Wattles). Roers, Richard Yusa, and Ben Roth rounded out the scoring on the way to the victory. In net, Bailey Aust was both strong and well defended, stopping all 15 shots on goal.

The Caps return to Landon Arena this weekend for a three game set against the Texas Junior Brahmas. Friday and Saturday’s games will be at 3pm and Sunday’s game will be at 11am. Tickets are only $5 and parking is free. For more information on upcoming games, call 785-286-PUCK or visit the Expocentre Box Office.
